Paranormarchitecture 2: The Sequel Concludes

•September 5, 2014 • Leave a Comment

Wrapped up after three sessions and pretty happy with how it all came out. I followed my own advice for once and left things more or less alone once I’d put them down. Less effing around means a finished piece with more energy and more immediacy. I think I’m going to stick with this process for a while. I’m rather enjoying myself.

Paranormarchitecture2… The Sequel

It’s been kind of a slow Summer due to some technical difficulties, scheduling conflicts, and an injury that kept me from climbing the four flights of stairs to my studio for a little while. I had grand designs of working on this series of paintings based on some photographical experimentation I’ve been doing. It took me ages to finish the first. I was determined that the second move along a bit more quickly. To that end I switched from using oils on linen to latex house paint on maple panels. The process is… slightly faster. This is the fruit of one afternoon’s labor. While it’s not quite finished we’re pretty darned close. As per my notes from the first go ’round I’m sticking with my first instincts, moving more quickly and definitively, and just leaving it the f**k alone.

Here’s to moving with more speed and assuredness.

I’ve made a new print available on FineArtAmerica.com.  It’s one of my favorites.  I call it, “Crossed”.

Found out I’d made the cover of this month’s Pulse magazine when I saw it sitting on the paper rack at a local coffee shop, Mars Cafe.

Well ain’t that somethin’.

No Time Like the Present

•April 30, 2014 • Leave a Comment

In just a few short weeks I’ll be teaching a course in charcoal drawing at the mighty Des Moines Social Club. I can’t tell you how excited I am not only to be working with the DMSC, but to be teaching again.

I do have a small painting group that gathers in my studio from time to time (message me if you’re interested in that), but it’s not the same as actually teaching the nuts and bolts of drawing techniques. I love to work with people who’ve never drawn before or who are unsure about their abilities. There’s nothing like seeing the look of amazement and personal satisfaction on a student’s face when they realize what they’re really capable of. Check out the link below. It’s the sign-up page for the class and it’s where you’ll find the fine print, etc.

Sign up in person at the DMSC, or give it a click. Find out what you can do.

See you soon!

Adjust the Saturation

Spent a little time last weekend hammering out some rough pastel studies for upcoming work. I thought I’d post these tidbits. I spent my evening getting away from detail of any kind and just horsing around with some different color combinations. Did I produce anything worth showing  in its entirety to the rest of the world? Nope. Did I make some headway for personal development? You betcha. It’s all good because tonight I’ve got to get back down to the business of making Art and paying my rent. The best part is tonight I’ve got a fresh perspective from which to work.

Much happiness.

Cheers,

R
